Roger Keeran

Roger Keeran (ou Roger Roy Keeran / Roger R. Keeran) (né en 1944 à Leeper dans le Michigan) est un historien américain ayant enseigné à Cornell, à Princeton, à Rutgers et à la Faculté de l'Empire State[2] de l'Université d'État de New York. Spécialiste du syndicalisme ouvrier[3], il a publié deux ouvrages majeurs – The Communist Party and the Auto Workers' Unions en 1980 et Socialism Betrayed: Behind the Collapse of the Soviet Union en 2004, ce dernier traduit en plusieurs langues – et nombre d'articles dans des revues d'histoire ou de sociologie. Depuis 2013, il est professeur émérite de la Faculté de l'Empire State.

Biographie

Études

Étudiant dans les années 1960, Roger Keeran passe une licence ès lettres à l'université de Wayne State à Détroit dans le Michigan. Pour payer ses études, il travaille dans une usine du constructeur automobile General Motors. Il est aussi co-président du Comité de Détroit pour la fin de la guerre du Viêt Nam[4],. Il passe ensuite une maîtrise ès lettres en histoire des États-Unis et un doctorat d'histoire à l'université du Wisconsin[5],. Sa thèse (publiée) : Communists and Auto Workers: The Struggle for a Union, 1919-1941, University of Wisconsin-Madison, 1974, 766 p.

Carrière universitaire

En septembre 1973, il fait ses débuts comme professeur à l'École IRL (School of Industrial and Labor Relations) de l'université Cornell, à Ithaca, dans l'État de New York[6]. S'intéressant à l'action syndicale des militants communistes dans l'industrie automobile aux États-Unis du milieu des années 1920 à la fin des années 1940 (où les forces du parti sont décimées), il publie un livre sur le sujet en 1980 : The Communist Party and the Auto Workers' Unions, qui deviendra un classique de l'histoire du mouvement syndical américain[7]. Cette publication, dans un contexte de guerre froide, mettant en vedette l'élimination des communistes du syndicat United Auto Workers, vaut toutefois à Roger Keeran de perdre son poste à Cornell[8]. Il enseignera ensuite dans les universités de Princeton et de Rutgers dans le New Jersey. En 2012, année qui voit son départ à la retraite, il enseignait à la Faculté de l'Empire State de l'Université d'État de New York, où il était coordinateur pour le diplôme de maîtrise en Labor and Policy Studies[9],.

Socialism Betrayed

En 2004, il publie, en collaboration avec l'économiste du monde du travail Thomas Kenny[10], Socialism Betrayed: Behind the Collapse of the Soviet Union, un ouvrage traduit ultérieurement en français, portugais, chinois, persan, espagnol, russe, bulgare et turc[11],[12]. L'auteur y examine, selon les termes de Peter Symon dans The Guardian, « les nombreuses situations et erreurs qui sont indubitablement à l'origine du renversement du socialisme et de l'éclatement de l'Union soviétique en plusieurs États se voulant indépendants »[13]. La première édition est rapidement épuisée, principalement en raison de critiques favorables dans des journaux et revues de gauche (People's Weekly World (États-Unis), The Morning Star (Grande-Bretagne), Socialist Voice (Irlande), People'’s Voice (Canada), The Spark (Canada), The Guardian (Grande-Bretagne), Australian Marxist Review (Australie), Marxistische Blaetter (Allemagne)[14]

Engagement

Roger Keeran est membre du Parti communiste des États-Unis d'Amérique[15] depuis quelque 30 ans.Il est membre du comité consultatif[17] de la revue marxiste Science & Society [18].
